Manju Kapur’s Custody is an exemplary novel in which all characters Raman, Shagun, Ashok Khanna, Ishita think of their own feelings, emotions, desires, needs, purposes, but no one thinks what the small children want and how they feel. The parents are embroiled in a legal battle for Custody of their children. Custody is about marriage and divorce with children at the heart of it. Manju Kapur focuses on the women who is not particularly spectacular, ambitions or successful, but what she brings out with sensibility and perception in the conflict that arises when traditional Indian values that women are reached on come in contact with other worlds.
