Herbert George Wells’ the time machine as a salient novella of time travel in science fiction

Prikshit Singh

The Time Machine is without a doubt the trend-setter of all science fiction works, and it is one of its masterpieces in science fiction. This work depicts technology's positive and negative aspects with a great combination of utopian and dystopian fiction. It uses the lives of Morlocks and Eloi to demonstrate the injustices of the Victorian era. The Time Machine not only criticises Victorian society but also introduces scientific potential by discussing the fourth-dimensional theory of time. Though Einstein and Charles Darwin are not mentioned, The Time Machine closely follows the fuzzy boundary between science and fiction. It depicts the development of the human species and time travel through the theory of relativity, as defined by the concept of true science fiction. In any case, the Time Machine is not a light diversion. Wells successfully criticise the fundamental belief of contemporary time - that rational and imaginative development would automatically lead to a better tomorrow - in part as a reaction to the era's well-known utopian literature. Being a work of sci-fi the Time Machine additionally discusses the other contemporary issues of that time which can be not really seen in science fiction works which just spins around the innovative methodology instead of examining about the contemporary issues of that time.
