Abstract
The works of Arundhati Roy, particularly her Booker Prize-winning novel The God of Small Things, represent a significant contribution to contemporary Indian English literature. This study explores the thematic depth, narrative techniques, and socio-political concerns reflected in the novel. The research focuses on key issues such as caste discrimination, forbidden love, childhood trauma, and the rigid structures of society that shape individual destinies. Roy’s use of non-linear narrative, symbolic language, and fragmented storytelling challenges traditional literary forms while offering a deeply emotional and critical perspective on Indian society. The study also examines how personal experiences and historical contexts influence the narrative, particularly in portraying marginalized voices and suppressed identities. Through a detailed literary analysis, the paper highlights Roy’s critique of social hierarchies and her exploration of human relationships within oppressive systems. The findings suggest that the novel not only reflects the complexities of postcolonial India but also raises universal questions about justice, memory, and identity.
