Abstract
This research examines the impact of R. K. Narayan on Indian English Literature, focusing on candid storytelling, cultural reality, and his lasting influence. His stories offer a rich depiction of Indian life within the imagined town of Malgudi, where everyday people face complex emotional, social, and ethical dilemmas. The study highlights Narayan’s clear and relatable writing style, which powerfully communicates deep psychological understandings and common human issues. It also investigates into his portrayal of societal challenges involving caste, gender expectations, colonial effects, and financial disparity. Moreover, the research looks at his employment of humor and irony as significant narrative devices that expose the inconsistencies in human actions and societal frameworks. A qualitative and interpretative strategy grounded in textual assessment has been utilized. The results show that Narayan’s stories effectively connect cultural authenticity with universal relevance, positioning him as a key figure in contemporary Indian English storytelling.
